Volunteering makes people happier according to studies.
Today’s recent studies reveal that people who volunteered are more satisfied with their lives. They also expressed better mental health than those who did not volunteer.
In the Journal of Happiness Studies, researchers gathered and studied data from 70,000 subjects in the United Kingdom. These subjects identified with having struggles with their own mental health. But by being volunteers, they found many beneficial side-effects.
Ricky Lawton, an associate director at Simetrica Research Consultancy, shares that volunteers have better mental health because of a multitude of factors.
First, volunteering opens up the self to experience a “warm glow”- an experience that could be described as a warm feeling of fulfillment. Second, volunteering creates meaningful connections to the community. Finally, volunteering allows us to build and improve our professional skills.
But, how can you actively volunteer during the COVID-19 pandemic? As everyone has to observe social distancing and follow the health protocols imposed by the government.
There is no doubt the entire world has been affected by the pandemic and the lockdown implemented by state authorities to minimize the spread of the virus.
The easiest way to make an impact and stay safe while doing volunteer work is to start your efforts in your own community.
For example, with our organization (Philippines Volunteerism Initiative, Inc.), you can volunteer by:
• Donating food supplies such as canned goods, oatmeal, children’s milk and more;
• Helping the elderly, persons with disability and single mothers in the neighborhood by assisting them in buying their basic needs like food, medicine and other household supplies;
• Visiting local churches to help out in church activities.
Become a part of our organization by volunteering to serve other people. We are working to enhance the lives of those in need right now – and you can help!
